Abstract
In the H.264 video coding standard, a rate-distortion optimized (RDO) method for mode decision provides higher compression efficiency than previous video standards. However, it causes a large amount of encoding time. Thus, a fast mode decision is necessary in order to reduce the encoding time. In this paper, we propose a fast mode decision algorithm using motion cost for motion estimation to reduce candidate modes. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the encoding time by 85.6% on average related to H.264 standard.
